Lucas Grollenberg, a Dutch Dominican, is already known to English readers as the author of one of the best illustrated atlases of the Bible. In this short book he writes more refreshingly than one might have thought possible on one of the most-discussed topics of human, history: the life and work of Jesus and its meaning for us today.
The book arose out of a series of meetings which Fr. Grollen-berg has had over recent years with lay groups and is written in an informative style with a great deal of scholarship behind it. But whereas learning in other scholars often leads to long and complicated books, here it is distilled and concentrated into a text of deceptive simplicity. The reader is not expected to have any prior knowledge of the subject, nor is he expected to have any formal commitment to the Christian churches.
It is hard to think of any other book about Jesus which is so suitable for laymen to read: anyone from the early teens on will have no difficulty in following a fascinating story and the issues it raises. At the same time they will be prompted to think more deeply about the essentials of human life and about the present state of the churches.
