'The very heart of the Gospel lies in the fact that God has never stopped loving us. At the moment when we are most aware of our guilt, most overwhelmed by the evil in ourselves, we are bidden by the Gospel to look at Christ on the Cross. Really to look at him there and to understand why he is there is to be safeguarded from any thoughts of “cheap grace”, of any minimizing of the reality of our guilt. But it is also to know that the last word about our human condition, God’s last word to man in man’s uttermost extremity, is a word of love.’
