Charles Williams, who died in 1945 at the age of fifty-nine, was a man of genius in several kinds of writing. His work included poetry, literary criticism, novels, and several theological works. His literary friends included the fa¬mous “Inklings”—C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, and others—with whom he shared his writing in its early stages.
While Williams is best known for his seven novels, which have been described as “supernatural thrillers,” his theological writings, including The Forgiveness of Sins, have received critical acclaim as well. In this book, first published in 1942, Williams examines how forgiveness is presented in Shakespeare, how it appears in the theology of the Christian Church, and finally, how it operates, or should operate, among people. Long unavailable to American audiences, the book is now being reissued to make available to today’s readers the theological insights of this unusual and gifted writer.
