I protest against most of the scores of books, booklets, and tracts which evangelicals are producing today about the devil. They are too filled with pessimism. They paint the devil too strong, as though he were really a second god running our universe. ‘
I feel sometimes that calling the devil his majesty and stressing endlessly his kingdom, his imps, and his demons in Christians is a worse “God is dead” movement than the one taught by some theologians.
Unwittingly and unintentionally, those who are painting the devil too large and powerful may be as great a detriment to wholesome Christian living as are the humanists, liberals, or existentialists who are painting God too small.
What the Christian church needs is a renewal of her faith in God s sovereignty, so that Christians really believe that God is in control, and that even during life's trials the devil has no freedom apart from His divine will.
The underlying assumption of this book is that God wants persons to take responsibility for their own lives and that he offers a way of victory over the powers of evil. Along the way, I pause to show why exorcism is less than the scriptural ideal for helping one another.
