One of the perplexing problems that has agitated the Church down through the centuries is that of the Millennium— its nature, purpose and time of accomplishment. This question probably is debated today with as much vigor and with as little agreement as in any period of the past. Broadly speaking, there are three general systems which profess to set forth the teaching of Scripture regarding the Second Coming of Christ and the future course of the Kingdom. They are: Postmillennialism, Amillennialism and Premillennialism.
Dr. Boettner points out that each of these systems is consistently evangelical, that each has been held by many able and sincere men, and that the differences between them arise not because of any conscious or intended disloyalty to Scripture but primarily because of the distinctive method employed by each in its interpretation of Scripture.
The Church has never yet debated these eschatological problems to a final conclusion nor stated her position concerning them positively and clearly as she has done in regard to the other doctrines of the Christian system. Since there is such a radical difference between the systems, particularly between the extremes of Postmillennialism on the one hand and Dispensationalism on the other, it is a matter of great importance that the true solution should be found.
