This book is Part 3 of the TEF Church History Course initiated by John Foster. It takes us to 18(X). covering the period when new movements of reform and expansion were setting the stage for the missionary ‘explosion’ and development of the 19th and 20th centuries - which will be described in Part 4.
Alan Thomson necessarily deals here more fully with ideas than did the earlier volumes, because it was ideas that shaped the reforms and opened doors to political, intellectual, and eventually technological revolution. But he has carried forward John Foster’s emphasis on people as the makers of history. Most of the illustrations are contemporary portraits of those who influenced the course of events and the growth of the Church, and many of the suggested study and discussion topics relate to the role and responsibility of Christians in the world today.
