Paul Tournier has practised medicine in Geneva since 1928, as a physician who acquired psychiatric training and experience because he learned that many of his patients needed help going deep» than drugs or surgery. His well- known books A Doctors Casebook in the Light of the Bible and The Meaning of Persons were issued simultaneously as SCM Cheap Editions, as were, more recently, Escape from Loneliness and The Strong and the Weak. The SCM Press also publishes his The Adventure of Living (255), The Person Reborn (30s), A Place for You (35s) and three short books in A Doctor Reflects series - Marriage Difficulties, The Meaning of Gifts and The Seasons of Life (7s 6d each). His Guilt and Grace is published by Hodder and Stoughton and The Healing of Persons by Collins.
In The Strong and the Weak Dr Tournier maintains that people should not be classified as strong and weak. We are all strong towards some, weak towards others, and whether our initial reactions are aggressive or escapist we all need to learn psychological courage and spiritual wisdom. ‘This thesis is illustrated by a wealth of example drawn from the author’s psychiatrical experience, and every pastor will greatly benefit from reflection upon the cases which Dr Tournier describes’ (Sherwin Bailey in the Church of England Newspaper). ‘This is a book not only for pastors, sociologists, teachers and leaders, but for everybody.
